Stillwater Criterium Results
Stage 6 of the 2010 Nature Valley Grand Prix concluded in Stillwater on Sunday afternoon. Following five days and 265 miles of bike racing over five stages, the pro men and women faced one of the most challenging criterium courses in the country.
Starting at Noon, the women raced 13 laps on the 1.5-mile-long course - climbing the infamous Chilkoot Hill (a 1/8th-mile uphill climb at a grad of 22 percent) on every lap. Evelyn Stevens (HTC-Columbia) placed first, followed by Shelley Evans (Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12). Catherine Cheatley (Colavita/Baci Pro Cycling), placed third in the stage.
The overall women's 2010 Nature Valley Grand Prix champion was Shelley Evans. Evans won both the Saint Paul and Minneapolis criteriums along with numerous sprint time bonuses to give her an edge over Evelyn Stevens.
The men's race featured 20 laps and included a massive wreck 200 feet into the first lap in which nearly 20 riders had to restart after getting untangle. During the 60 minutes of racing, several break attempts were made in which riders tried to build a time gap over the group behind them, the United Healthcare team took over with three laps remaining. Rory Sutherland from Australia, riding for United Healthcare p/b MAXXIS, charged the hill on the final lap, edging out yellow jersey leader Scott Zwizanski (Kelly Benefit Stategies) who fell out of the top three positions. Finishing second in the Stillwater stage was Luis Romero Amaran (Jamis/Sutter Home p/b Colavita) followed by David Veilleux riding for Kelly Benefit Strategies.
Rory Sutherland won the overall men's general classification for the 2010 Nature Valley Grand Prix followed by Scott Zwizanski and David Veilleux.
