MN Fixed Gear Classic
Race Report – June 13, 2010
The Kids Are Alright – Teens Notch Men’s Omnium Wins

Two teenagers made their presences felt in a world class men’s field at the 2010 MN Fixed Gear Classic.  Colton Barrett (Texas Roadhouse), a 19-year-old, and Matt Baranoski (Alliance Environmental), a 17-year-old, won the Endurance and Sprint Omniums respectively defeating such luminaries as Emile Abraham (Aerocat), Austin Carroll (Adageo Energy) and Colby Pearce (Big Shark Racing p/b THF).  On the women’s side, multi-time US National Champion Cari Higgins (Peanut Butter & Co/TWENTY 12) earned top honors in both the women’s Sprint and Endurance Omnium.  Higgins won the Sprint Omunium in convincing fashion and edged Kacey Manderfield (Cycle Loft) by a single point in the Endurance Omnium.

After a rain-shortened session on Saturday, riders in the 2010 MN Fixed Gear Classic battled for 7 hours on Sunday to complete the event under cloudy skies.  The long day’s efforts included match sprints, scratch and points races for both fields and a 100-lap Madison for the men.  Saturday’s brief session included Men’s Flying 200m TT qualifying, won by Baranoski with a time of 11.51, edging Jason Garner (Northbrook Garner) by just 0.02”.  Women’s Keirin qualifying heats were also completed on Saturday before rain ended competition.

Men

Match sprint preliminary rounds reduced the field from eight qualifiers to a gold final between Baranoski and Jon Linchitz (Affinity Cycles).  In race 1, the two sprinters eyed each other warily, rolling around the blue band.  With 2 laps to go, they upped the tempo, climbing to the stayers’ line.  At the bell, Baranoski dove from the railing in turn four earning a bike-length lead that would stand to the finish.  Race 2 unfolded similarly, with Baranoski diving for the lane at the bell.  This time, Linchitz proved stronger, passing the junior in the back straight to win by 3 meters.  In a replay of the first two races, Baranoski hit the gas at the bell and again Linchitz answered decisively in the back straight, winning the top prize convincingly.  In the bronze final, Garner overcame the gamesmanship of Chris Ferris (PJW Racing), diving under his opponent at the bell and holding him off to the line.

Two qualifying heats narrowed the men’s 80-lap points race final to 20 riders.  At the gun, Pat Lemieux (Texas Roadhouse) set a solid pace, stringing the pack around the track for the first 9 laps.  At the first bell, Dan Schueller (Gopher Wheelmen) attacked, pulling Barrett with him.  Barrett’s surge would continue, giving him maximum points, followed by Daniele DeFranceschi (Jet Fuel Coffee), Abraham and Pearce.  Adam Bergman (Texas Roadhouse) kept the pace high after the sprint, springing break-away specialist Lemieux and a trio of chasers that would stay together through the next sprint.  Points went to Dan Harm (Doppio Cycling), Lemieux, David Byer (Jet Fuel Coffee) and Chad Hartley (Team Kenda p/b Geargrinders).  Pearce pulled the group back to the leaders and was rewarded with top points at the third sprint.  The next 10 laps were identical as Pearce carried the bunch to within sight of a breakaway trio – earning himself 4th place points at sprint four and giving Ryan Sabga (Black Dog Cycling), Barrett and Hartley a reward for their breakaway efforts.  Barrett immediately attacked, gaining a quarter-lap that would hold for seven laps until a surging Byer overtook him and gained a quarter-lap lead of his own that would last through sprint 5.  The field regrouped until the 6th bell when Pearce would surge over a charging Cody Stephenson (Ft. Lewis College) to score 1st place points.  Several attacks would fail during the next 10 laps until Sabga launched at the bell, earning 2nd place points just behind Pearce.  Harm and Pearce would work together to gain a 50-meter advantage that would last 7 laps, before being joined by Bergman and James Tainter (Silver Cycling).  The quartet would take the final sprint nearly in unison.  Pearce’s 22 points were enough for a convincing victory.

The final men’s event, the 100-lap Madison, featured a blistering pace despite its place at the end of a grueling 7-hour day.  The nine teams set a high tempo from the gun through the first sprint.  Brian Crosby (Speedfix p/b Zubaz) launched an attack at the first bell only to be caught by a charging DeFranceschi at the line.  A brief surge split the field for a few laps until Bergman launched a successful flyer to take top points in the next sprint.  After a short rest Bergman attacked again, was caught and launched again. After a re-shuffling of the deck, the teams of Crosby/Dan Casper (Grandstay) and DeFranceschi/Stephan Meyer (Jet Fuel Coffee) nearly gained a lap, taking the top 2 spots in the 3rd sprint.  Brief attacks by several teams kept the pace high ahead of the 4th sprint before Pearce and teammate Andy Kruse (Speedfix p/b Zubaz) gained 60 meters that would stick through the sprint.  Bergman and Barrett attacked off the sprint taking Carroll/Hartley and Pearce/Kruse with them for 15 laps, knocking 4 teams down a lap.  With 3 laps remaining, Barrett jumped, holding his advantage through the gun over Pearce/Kruse and Abraham/Harm.  Barrett/Bergman would take the Madison victory, followed by DeFranceschi/Meyer and Kruse/Pearce.

Women

Fourteen qualifiers contested the 40-lap scratch race.  The easy early pace was quickly shattered by Jennifer Greenberg’s (Team Kenda) attack 2 laps into the race.  After gaining 40 meters, Greenberg caught the peloton’s attention as Missy Erickson (Ft. Lewis College) brought the field together.  Higgins attacked one lap later, taking Dena Eaton (shePedals Cycling), Erickson and Colleen Gulick (Team Kenda) with her.  Megan Hottman (Treads.com/DFT) would bridge to the leaders as they gained a lap on the field with 22 to go.  The re-united peloton remained together at high speed for 6 laps until Higgins, Manderfield and Hottman attacked again, eventually gaining as much as 200 meters on the field.  At the gun, Higgins, Manderfield and Hottman would take the top 3 places with Elena Dorr (Synergy) leading the field across the line.

The final women’s event, a 60-lap points race featured frequent attacks, the best of which would gain as much as 160 meters. The first attack, by Julia Manley (Rocky Mounts – Izze), Terra James (Behind Bars/Little Guy Racing), Kristen Meshberg (Flatlandia Cycling) and a bridging Greenberg, would gain 60 meters through the first sprint.  Points went to Manley, James, Greenberg and Meshberg.  James would fade after 3 laps as the remaining leaders maintained their advantage until the 2nd bell.  After catching the trio, Manderfield, Higgins, Hottman would take the top points with Manley staying on Hottman’s wheel for 4th.  The field eyed each other closely for five laps until Hottman and Higgins attacked bringing Manderfield along for the top 3 places in sprint 3.  Hottman immediately surged gaining the biggest gap of the race.  She would stay away through the 4th sprint.  Higgins, Gulick and Manderfield would lead the charging field for the remaining points.  Hottman, exhausted from her 2.5 k time trial, rejoined the group one lap later.  The pack remained together until the 5th bell when Higgins attacked bringing Manderfield and Erickson with her for points.  Greenberg took one final flyer with 9 to go, gaining a quarter-lap, but was caught as Manderfield and Higgins overtook her at the bell.  Final sprint points went to Manderfield by a wheel-width over Higgins, followed by Hottman and Manley.
